MUSEUM CAFE

THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

Client: Bon Appetit Management
Architectural Firm: EDG

The Challenge

The Art Institute of Chicago features a highly publicized, architectural award-winning restaurant, Terzo Piano, in the Modern Art Wing. I had the task of differentiating the ground floor cafe in the Historic Wing from Terzo Piano, while simultaneously addressing the challenge of leading visitors down a flight of stairs and around a corner to the cafe entrance. I came up with various solutions to make this indirect path of travel both a delightful and memorable experience.

The Art of Discovery

Museum guests are enticed to discover a newly remodeled contemporary cafe by following a compelling graphic ribbon. At the end of the journey an exciting new dining destination awaits with action stations, a members only lounge and a turn of the century courtyard. Playful, bold and modern, the Museum Cafe is the ultimate showcase for art and cuisine.

PORTABLE DINING UNIT/PDU

DINING BY DESIGN 2013

Awards: AIA Merit Award - "Small Projects"
IIDA Honor Award - "Against The Odds"

DIY Pop-Up Dining

I was part of a design-build team that aimed to create an easy-to-transport, temporary structure for mobile dining. We came up with a concept for a Portable Dining Unit (PDU) that could be downloaded and created with a laser cutter and quickly constructed with zip ties and a few friends. We researched and tested various types of materials that were affordable, weatherproof, and could provide enough structural support. We also tested various forms to optimize the structure for rapid deployment and disassembly.

Designed with the young emerging chef in mind, the entire unit is comprised of collapsible screens, portable tables and folding chairs. The lightweight translucent polycarbonate shell unfolds like a giant piece of origami to create an intimate dining scene, while allowing light to softly filter through.

AQUARIUM OF THE PACIFIC

AQUARIUM EXPANSION
LONG BEACH, CA

Architectural Firm: EHDD
Size: 160,000 sq. ft.
Awards: 2007 Livable Building Award

A Cultural Icon

Located at the center of the Queensway Bay waterfront development, this aquarium serves as both an icon for the community and a metaphor for the ocean it adjoins. Inside and out, the building is a fluid, organic space in which the traditional barriers between people, architecture, exhibits, and the natural environment are purposefully dissolved. Along with exhibits and educational spaces such as classrooms, hands-on learning labs, and a theater, the aquarium has a cafe and three terraces that overlook the ocean.

An Immersive Experience

The Aquarium of the Pacific Expansion included the addition of a planetarium theater for showcasing marine lifeforms "too large to live in captivity and too small to be seen with the naked eye". The interior features a 180 degree panoramic screen and illuminated stage, while the exterior of the theater addition is expressed as a biomorphic form clad in chromatic glass panels. It also punctuates the interior, creating a dialogue between interior and exterior environments and serving as the inspiration for the interior finish palette.

REACTIVATE THE LIBRARY

As the physical world grows increasingly augmented by digital resources, the library becomes relevant again through M.A.K.E. Space - a place for hands-on learning. It is a community of doers, makers, thinkers, and learners fueled by the culture of Craft. Within these walls, volunteers share skills to empower a generation of artists and entrepreneurs.

A VIBRANT COMMUNITY

Community is reinforced through the design - interactions between visitors are encouraged through fluid spatial adjacencies, visual connections within the interior, and the dialogue between the interior and exterior environments.
